Monarda citriodora

Monarda citriodora — known as lemon mint, lemon beebalm, or lemon horsemint — is a wildflower native to the central and southern United States, historically used by numerous Native American tribes for skin conditions and as an insect repellent. It belongs to the same aromatic family as oregano and thyme and contains thymol and carvacrol, potent antimicrobial compounds that act against a broad spectrum of bacteria and fungi. The lemon-mint aroma is softer than peppermint, making it suitable for sensitive skin formulations.

Did You Know

Several Native American tribes, including the Zuni and Keres peoples, used Monarda species as both a medicinal herb and a flavoring for wild game — a culinary-medicinal overlap that mirrors basil's dual role.

Our Sourcing

Monarda citriodora — lemon mint — grows readily in InVine's botanical garden in Tallahassee, where the heat and humidity create the conditions this native wildflower prefers. We harvest the flowering tops and leaves when the plant is in full aromatic expression, then dry and slow-infuse in cold-extracted organic oils for eight full weeks, drawing out the full complement of thymol and carvacrol the herb has to offer.

Why We Use It

This plant grows abundantly in our garden, and its connection to traditional insect-bite remedies felt like a natural fit for the Bug Bite Balm. The traditional use of Monarda by Native American peoples for bites and stings confirmed what I had observed here — it is genuinely calming on reactive skin. The thymol and carvacrol content give it real antimicrobial protection, while the lemon-mint aroma blends beautifully with lemongrass and lemon balm without overpowering them. It is one of those herbs that does its work quietly.
