Lemon Thyme

Thymus citriodorus

Lemon thyme is a hybrid of common thyme and wild thyme with a pronounced citrus-herb aroma that distinguishes it from its culinary relatives. Like all thymes, it is rich in thymol and carvacrol — two of the most well-documented antimicrobial phenols in the plant world, effective against a broad range of bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. In European herbal tradition it has been used specifically for respiratory conditions, as an expectorant and airway-clearing herb, making it a natural fit in a breathing support formula.

Did You Know

Thymol — derived from thyme — was the primary active ingredient in Listerine mouthwash when it was first formulated in 1879 and remains in the formula today, one of the few plant-derived compounds to survive in a mass commercial product in its original form.

Our Sourcing

Lemon thyme grows as a perennial in InVine's Tallahassee garden and is among our most reliable year-round herbs. We harvest just before flowering — the moment when thymol and carvacrol reach their peak — then dry the stems and leaves before beginning an eight-week slow infusion in cold-extracted organic oils. Florida's warm winters allow it to stay productive when most Mediterranean herbs slow down.

Why We Use It

I added lemon thyme to Breathe Free because it bridges two different parts of the formula. The thymol content gives it genuine respiratory antimicrobial action — this is not just an aromatic herb, it is actively doing work in the airways. And the lemon character connects back to the lemon balm's calming nature, creating continuity through the formula. It is the herb in Breathe Free that most people would not recognize by name but that quietly rounds everything out. Take it away and the formula feels incomplete.
